Animals Behind Human Prosperity

Human prosperity is often explained through systems, technology, or human decision-making, but this overlooks a quieter set of contributors. Across different periods and environments, animals have played roles in supporting survival, stability, and development, sometimes directly, and sometimes through the natural systems humans depend on.

This article examines a range of cases, from agriculture and rescue to protection, tourism, science, and pollination, to show how these contributions varied in form. Taken together, they highlight a broader pattern: that progress has been supported not by a single type of input, but by a combination of roles, each influencing human activity in different ways.

Food Production Support

Butterflies

As agriculture began to develop around 8000–6000 BCE, human societies became increasingly dependent on the successful growth and reproduction of crops. While attention often focuses on domesticated plants and animals, this process also relied on less visible natural systems. Among these were pollinators, including butterflies, which played a role in enabling flowering plants to reproduce.

Butterflies move between plants as they feed, transferring pollen in the process. This supports fertilisation, allowing plants to produce seeds and continue their life cycle. Although not the most dominant pollinators, their contribution forms part of a wider system that underpins plant diversity and agricultural stability.

Unlike livestock or working animals, butterflies were never directly managed or controlled. Their role operated in the background, functioning as part of the natural environment that agriculture depended on. Human societies benefited from their presence without needing to organise or direct their activity.

This makes their contribution less visible but no less important. By supporting the reproduction of plants, butterflies helped maintain the systems that food production relies on. In doing so, they represent a form of prosperity built not through direct use, but through the stability of the natural processes that sustain human life.

Agriculture in Harsh Conditions

Highland Cows

Starting with one of the classics, cattle have supported human societies since they were first domesticated around 8000–6000 BCE, but not all environments were equally suited to them. In the Scottish Highlands, where poor soils, harsh weather, and long winters limited agricultural options, most livestock struggled to survive. By the early medieval period (c. 500–1000 CE), however, a hardy form of cattle had become established in the form of what we now recognise as Highland cows.
Their value was consistency. With thick coats, Highland cattle could remain outdoors year-round, feeding on rough grass that other animals would reject. This reduced the need for shelter, stored feed, and intensive labour, making them a practical choice for communities struggling to work with what little they had.
For rural populations, this reliability mattered more than productivity. Highland cows provided steady access to meat and hides, helping sustain communities in areas where farming might otherwise have been unstable. Rather than transforming the landscape, they allowed people to live within its restrictions.
In this sense, their contribution to human prosperity was straightforward but significant. They made it possible to maintain settlement and make money in harsh land, ensuring continuity where conditions might have forced decline. But animals throughout history have only been valuable for food and warmth, as we will explore with mans’ best friend.

Survival in the Alps

St Bernard Dogs

On that note, the story of one of these breeds of trusty companions starts high in the Alps, with the Great St Bernard Pass serving as a natural route between regions of Europe. By the time a hospice was established there around 1050 CE, it was already clear that this route, while useful, was also dangerous. Snow, avalanches, and poor visibility made crossing it unpredictable, particularly in winter.
From the 1600s, large mountain dogs, later known as St Bernards — became part of the solution. Used by the monks who kept the hospice, these dogs were trained to locate travellers who had become lost, disoriented, or buried in snow. Their size, strength, and ability to navigate harsh conditions allowed them to work where humans alone often could not.
Their role was practical and consistent. Rather than eliminating danger, they reduced its consequences. Travellers who might otherwise have died in isolation had a greater chance of being found and brought back to safety. Over time, this made the route more reliable.
That reliability mattered beyond individual rescues. The pass was part of a wider network of movement, used by traders, travellers, and messengers. By making crossings safer, St Bernard dogs helped maintain the flow of people and goods through a difficult but important corridor, supporting connection between regions that depended on it. Work and Service Reliability

Labrador Retriever

Meeting these requirements, the Labrador Retriever traces its origins to working dogs in Newfoundland during the 1700s, where they assisted fishermen by retrieving nets and loose catch from cold waters. In the early 1800s, these dogs were brought to Britain and selectively bred, refining their temperament and physical traits. Among them, black Labradors became the most recognisable and widely used form.

Their value lay in reliability. Strong swimmers with a steady disposition, they could perform repetitive tasks consistently, whether hauling in fishing gear or retrieving game during hunts. This reduced loss, improved efficiency, and allowed human effort to be used more effectively.

Over time, their role expanded beyond traditional labour. The same traits — obedience, calmness, and adaptability — made them ideal for structured service work. In the modern period, black Labradors became closely associated with guide dog roles, supporting individuals with visual impairments and enabling greater independence.

Their contribution is defined by consistency rather than complexity. Across different contexts, they performed tasks that were simple in function but essential in outcome, reinforcing the idea that dependable labour can be as valuable as innovation in supporting human activity. As we know, though, there are obviously more than just two dog breeds in the world…

Frontier Protection

Boerboels

The tale (no pun intended) of another breed starts in southern Africa during the 17th and 18th centuries, when European settlers established farms in conditions that were often isolated and exposed. These were not settled, densely governed regions, but frontier environments where formal protection was limited and threats—whether from predators or intruders—were a constant concern. In this context, the Boerboel was developed.

Bred from European mastiff-type dogs, Boerboels were selected for strength, territorial awareness, and reliability. They were not ornamental animals but working dogs integrated into daily farm life, tasked with guarding livestock and protecting homesteads. Their presence provided a constant layer of security that did not depend on human vigilance alone.

This had practical consequences. Livestock losses could be reduced, property better defended, and the risks associated with isolated living made more manageable. For communities operating at the edge of settled territory, that stability was significant. It allowed farms to function more predictably and reduced the vulnerability that might otherwise have limited expansion.

The Boerboel’s role highlights a different form of contribution. While some animals supported production or labour, others ensured that those efforts were not undermined. In environments where security could not be assumed, protection itself became a foundation for sustaining human activity. As much as we all love dogs (or at least most of us) though, there are plenty of other amazing animals helping us out there.

Curiosity & Conservation Value

Sloths

Functioning in a completely different way for society, when modern zoos began to emerge in the early 19th century, they were built around the display of unusual and exotic animals. Institutions such as London Zoo, opened in 1828, reflected a growing public appetite for seeing species that existed far beyond Europe. By the mid to late 1800s, sloths were among the animals brought into these collections.

At first, their role was simple: they were objects of curiosity. Slow-moving and visually distinctive, sloths drew attention in a way few animals did. Visitors came to see something unfamiliar, and in doing so, contributed to the growing popularity and financial viability of zoological institutions.

Over time, that role evolved. As zoos shifted toward conservation and education in the 20th century, animals that attracted consistent public interest became increasingly valuable. Sloths, with their recognisable appearance and behaviour, proved effective in maintaining visitor engagement. This translated into revenue through ticket sales, donations, and wider support.

That financial support extended beyond the animals themselves. In modern contexts, particularly in Central and South America, sloths have become central to eco-tourism. Their presence helps fund conservation programmes and contributes to the protection of broader habitats, including rainforest ecosystems.

Their contribution is indirect but measurable. Sloths do not produce, protect, or assist in labour, but they generate sustained human interest. In doing so, they help convert attention into funding, supporting environmental preservation on a wider scale. All that being said, the past few centuries or so has proven that animals do not need to actually be with us to be fascinating.

Pterodactyls

Just one of many examples of how extinct animals have captured our imagnisation start in 1784, when a fossil discovered in Germany was described by Cosimo Alessandro Collini. At the time, it did not fit comfortably into existing categories of known animals. It was only in the early 19th century that Georges Cuvier identified it as a flying reptile, part of a world that no longer existed.
These creatures, now commonly referred to as “pterodactyls,” were unlike anything familiar. Their discovery forced a shift in understanding. Rather than a natural world that had always existed in its present form, the evidence pointed to one that had changed — one in which entire groups of animals had lived and disappeared.
This had wider consequences. Fossils like these became central to the development of palaeontology, helping establish the concept of extinction and contributing to the idea of deep time. The natural world was no longer static; it had a history that could be studied and reconstructed.
Beyond scientific circles, these discoveries also captured public attention. Museums, illustrations, and later media used such fossils to present a past that was both unfamiliar and structured, encouraging wider interest in science and natural history.
Pterodactyls did not contribute through direct interaction with humans, but through what they revealed. Their significance lies in expanding understanding — showing that knowledge itself can shape how societies interpret the world and their place within it.

Pattern of Contribution

Across situations, animals contributed to human prosperity in different but complementary ways. Some provided direct support through food and labour, while others reduced risk, enabled safer movement, secured resources, or generated economic value through attraction and engagement. 
In the case of prehistoric life, their contribution was intellectual, shaping how humans understand the world rather than interacting with it directly.
Taken together, this shows that prosperity has never depended on a single factor. It has been built through a combination of roles, each addressing different needs at different times. From sustaining life and supporting work to enabling stability, attracting interest, and expanding knowledge, animals formed part of a broader pattern in how societies developed and endured.
