This article is different from the others in the sense of it is more recent than any other topic we have covered, and the theme is very stronger. By this, I mean we are again visiting communism in the 20 th century. This time however, we are viewing the eastern portion of the Soviet Union, in Central Asia. With this switch in geography, there also needs to be an explanation regarding the tumultuous political switches between 1918 and 1939, therefore we will explore the context of this article.   Mid-Theme Visit: Country Links Yemen and Oman Hello , and I hope you find this article intriguing. This time we will visit an area history CAM has not yet touched on – Arabia. Now, Arabia’s interior has been left largely untouched by empires, whether it be due to the arid landscape empty of valuable natural resources or the hostile nomadic locals. But the seaward facing lands, particularly those on the south and east coast by the Persian Gulf are beneficial for reasons such as trade, as ancient Middle Eastern empires such as the Persians in the 6 th to 4 th centuries BCE. The south coast today will be of particular interest, as the random country generator used gave Yemen and Oman to work with.   Mid-Theme Visit: Country Links Ireland and Russia Hello, and welcome to a new country links article, and this time, east and west, like many times before, collide, but maybe not how it appears on face value, which we will explore. As has been the case with other recent articles, we will go into the 1900s, as it is just so tempting with the excitement of the political landscape produced. We will also be revisiting communism, with the first time being another country links article, United Kingdom and Vietnam, which is also available to view on my blog.  Here, however, unlike other history CAM articles, we will discover an element of secrecy. Next - Moving forward over 200 years, for the next history marker, we will stay in the US, considering the hotshot it swiftly became, but this time we will venture southwest, to Chicago, Illinois. Now, although Chicago does not border the sea, which benefitted Boston's old-fashioned economy, as discussed before, in the Boston Foundation: Global Economic Boat article, this would not stop Chicago taking centre stage in other ways, in this case, the way being up. In the late 1800s, an urban business revolution was underway, with bosses building their companies up - literally. This would change the way business would be conducted forever...   Mid-Theme Visit: Country Links France and Canada Greetings, and I hope you have a leisurely time reading this country links article. This time, we will view France and Canada. Now, even though the biggest link between France and Canada is colonial, as France colonised part of Canada, we will not be exploring the French empire. But it has been covered in other articles, therefore please see these in the history CAM blog. This article will be modern, and involve recurring 1900s themes. Here, we will venture into an event on an international scale, west and east – The Suez Crisis… Regarding the Suez Crisis, for some standard background, the canal was built in Northeast Egypt, in Northwest Africa, by a French company under Ferdinand De Lesseps in 1858. This optimised the area for trade connections between Asia and Europe. Since it was Middle Eastern, it was an ideal location for linking both continents.   Mid-Theme Visit: Country Links Romania and Egypt Welcome, and I hope you have a pleasant time reading this country links article. As is the case again and again, an empire is the answer to this link, between a Southeast European country and a Northeast African country. Sitting in the middle, is Turkey, which at the time of this incident, was ruled by the Ottomans, and had expanded far and wide. Now, to will get into specifics. Imperial Mayhem The Ottoman empire started at the end of the 13 th century, in 1299, by Osman I, having previously stuck to itself. It had a good run for over a century and a half, raiding lots of places. But in 1453, this success would explode with conquest, when Sultan Mehmed II took Constantinople, now Istanbul, from its ruler, Constantine XI.   Mid-Theme Visit: Country Links The United Kingdom and Vietnam Hello, and in this country links article, east and west really do collide. This collision revolves around the huge differences of ideas of what makes the most ideal state in the 20th century – communism v. capitalism. We are all familiar with the mighty Soviet Union, and other countries around the world it influenced. One of these countries, was Vietnam, in Southeast Asia, just below China. On that note, Vietnam’s situation leading up to this link was as follows - Ideological Drama Vietnam, at the end of the Second World War, in 1945, under future president Ho Chi Minh, which the big Vietnamese city is named after, declared independence from France. As a slight change, additionally, we will get biblical, therefore, also join me in viewing some Christian teachings. Relating to this Christianity, we will also be discussing momentum. But the Portuguese were more interested in wealth through trade, not power through ownership. All their trade stations, or feitoria, as the Portuguese said, show this. You will notice that I used the word exploration, and this is because when researching into the past for articles, such as these, it is important to consider it exploring, as we discover obscure history maybe not connected in this way before. For this exploration, regarding the time period, we will be travelling all the way into the 1970s, with the specific linking incident occurring roughly a quarter of a century after the second most recent article timewise.
