Guinea and Morocco

  

Hello, and welcome to another article of country links where we will exclusively focus on African nations.

As we have explored previously, the colonial period in modern history linked random countries you would not expect to have connections, and these include African countries which were in the French empire. We will now explore the connection between two of these - Guinea and Morocco.

France would even use one to colonise the other…

 France’s African Link

The French colonial empire had been successfully ongoing for centuries, kicking off in the mid-16th century in Canada. It then progressed into Africa the following century for slavery, as was the case with other European powers.

It would start in the West, but would head up north in the 1800s, gaining Algeria in 1830.

Back west for now though, France had taken Guinea between 1891 and 1893 as it viewed Guinea has having potential for big profits.

France’s most beneficial purpose for it however would be for Guinean army contributions. This was in the French colonial army, as management of French West Africa was becoming increasingly difficult, therefore local aid was required. This resulted in Napoleon III confirming the army in 1857. Within this army was Tirailleus Senegalais  (Senegalese Tirailleus), which turned out to be most useful. This is most evident as upon France setting its sights on Morocco in 1905, simply to up power. However, France’s main soldiers alone could not achieve colonisation.

This is where the Tirailleus Senegalais were handy as these cohorts did not just contain Senegalese soldiers, but soldiers from all of the French West African colony, which included Guinea. With these soldiers, the French ordered two factions of the Tirailleus Senegalais, including Guineans, in 1908 to enter Casablanca in Morocco where they were positioned for over two decades, with French ownership of Morocco lasting even longer.

In this way, the link between the two countries was military, as the Guineans aided in the French conquest of Morocco.
