North Korea and Thailand

Hello, and welcome to another article of country link – this time, we will venture to Asia. In the mid-1900s, East Asia experienced political upheaval due to regimes reshaping countries.

North Korea did this in 1945 under Kim Jong-Sun attempting formation of a communist state, perhaps influenced by the USSR linked to the 1917 Russian revolution. Communism in North Korea was perhaps emerging due to lots of impoverished people, and in 1946, North Korea’s communist party combined with the nationalistic New People’s Party. This combination brought together North Korea’s Workers’ Party, representing the needs of common people.

This party achieved electoral success, however, in 1949, it wanted unity with the south. However, the south disagreed with the northern regime and therefore desired continued separation. This resulted in - The Korean war. In 1950, the war started, but the USA fought the north as communism contradicted their capitalist values.

Before US independence in 1783, what we recognise as capitalism before it was idealised by economist Adam Smith was practiced in the British colonies in the modern US. In the mid-1600s, upon achieving economic independence, colonial merchants wished to expand financially. However, the British under rulers such as Charles II and George III amongst others considered this dangerous for their own aims of maintaining profits, therefore through law, they attempted to quash any accomplishment of economic freedom.

Over a century later, the colonists mainly under George Washington broke free from Britain. However, they never wanted to feel so economically trapped again. This developed the capitalist mindset of non-stop attainment of wealth.

 Eastern Intimidation

However, communism hurt this due to the state controlling nature of the ideal. This started in Russia and quickly spread in other eastern nations in Europe, Asia, and separately in North America. Therefore, the US acted to prevent communism progressing further. Because of this threat perpetuated by northern aims in the Korean War, the US under President Truman interfered. 

They also called for international aid, and Thailand complied, knowing that the US could improve their own unfortunate economic situation to a lack of economic development across the country.

In exchange for the US providing Thailand with $10 million dollars, the government of Thailand under Prime Minister Phibunsonkhram supplied aerial support in the war, fighting against the north. 

Therefore, the link between North Korea and Thailand is military as Thailand combatted North Korea during the Korean War.
