Saint Kitts/Nevis and Spain

Welcome, and please enjoy this article of country links, this time returning to colonial times in the Age of Exploration.

This time in history in the late medieval, modern, and contemporary (1945-2000) periods was characterised by exploration, discovery, and subsequent colonisation by European powers. The Iberian countries were the frontrunners of this age. They ventured to the Americas, then known as the West Indies in the late 15th and 16th centuries after having covered much of the west coast of Africa, including the surrounding islands.

Visual Paradise

Spain during this age was the first to discover the Americas, excluding earlier exploration by Scandinavians, and potentially Africans and Welsh people in the earlier Middle Ages. Spain achieved this firstly by sending the Italian sailor Christopher Columbus who journeyed across the Atlantic Ocean, landing in the modern Bahamas in 1492.

However, Columbus, while in the Caribbean region of North America additionally explored other lands, reporting sightings of the islands that today are known as Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Although Columbus only sighted these islands and did not land there or begin a settlement, he was still the first reported to have seen it under orders from Spain.

Britain and France jointly colonised Saint Kitts and Nevis, splitting it 130 years after its first sighting and valued it for sugar produce, much like other Caribbean nations due to the hot climate.

However, it is still crucial to note that the link here is explorative as a Spain discovered Saint Kitts and Nevis.
