The Netherlands and New Zealand

Hello, and apologies that it has regretfully been a very long time since I took to the blog – unfortunately other matters to tend to… I am returning strong though with a fresh new variation of country links. In the next 20 articles, I will be focusing on links in a random alphabetical order to keep articles exciting!

This article will also cover the middle of the Age of Exploration – or Age of Competition, as I explain in the last Marking History theme: Boston Foundation – Global Economic Boat, available to read on my blog, where I explain how the founding of Boston fuelled colonial competitiveness resulting in huge productivity.

Today, we will be viewing the intriguing link between the Netherlands and New Zealand and settling into this new theme with a short article to get a relaxing feel for this new version.

The relationship between the Netherlands and New Zealand started over 4 centuries ago, when the famous Dutch explorer Abel Tasman spotted the South Island of New Zealand in the winter of 1642. Though after some nasty encounters with the indigenous Maori, they swiftly left but not without record of the patch of land. The Maori themselves had actually only been in New Zealand for a few centuries, having journeyed for new land from East Polyensia from around 1200-1350.

Tasman, who explored much of the South Pacific, had been sent by the equally famous Dutchman Anthony Van Diemen, governor of the Dutch East Indies, also having Van Diemen’s Land, Australia, now Tasmania, after him, with the original purpose of exploring South America.

In this way, the link between the Netherlands and New Zealand is exploratory, as the Dutch discovered New Zealand for Europeans.
